The attentions of all these fish can be harnessed to actually attract more carp into your swim buy only if you use enough bait in the right way in correct situations to do it, (many top anglers really are masters at doing this!)
In fact many very consistent big carp anglers are not particularly technically skilled but have an incredible if not instinctive talent for maximising the application and leverage of the impacts of bait. Many of my free baits were well over 25 millimeters in size and none were made to be round but rather all were odd shaped and were in fact not prepared by rolling at all. Only a small proportion of the free baits were of around the standard 12 or 14 millimeter sizes. These free baits were designed to dissolve within about 4 hours of immersion thereby doing the maximum work in pulling and triggering fish while not giving them much time to actually eat them! The vast majority of ready made boilies will not break down for at least 8 to 36 hours or longer so you can see how much their effectiveness is limited by their actual form; the preference of average anglers for durable hard boilies as free baits and hook baits has many drawbacks!
I have seen with my own eyes very big carp actually fanning away standard round boilies in order to be able to pick up smaller odd shaped baits in safety. (On the lake bed odd shaped baits are very often standard round boilies which have been in the water a while, long enough for smaller fish to whittle them down in size and shape and which wary carp view with far less suspicion as these hook them far less than whole round baits!)
By contrast though, my hook baits and a proportion of matching free baits were of a totally different design and were super-boosted with natural triggers and were rock hard. These baits were of very small size and about as far from conventional machine-rolled shape, texture, density etc that you could imagine. These baits in large sizes where used in PVA bags and a very hard paste in large sized pieces were also used to very good effect.
This might all sound like common sense and to some of you like hard work, but I paid my money to fish the commercial fishery just the same as the other 15 anglers there but I spent less on my bait and still had better results despite them using the most popular brands of ready made baits. In part due to my 30 years in carp fishing, my own scientific research and long bait-making experience and my fellow BCSG friends my interest in bait and fish senses, metabolism, health, etc and my ability to improve my baits has come a very long way, and every week I get to learn new things to give me more competitive fishing edges and even more economical baits!
You may not be into master antioxidants, metabolic stimulants, bioactive flavour components or sorting the first to third limiting amino acids in your bait recipes. But I can assure you that just a few of the most powerful secrets will multiply your catches to the degree you will shudder at just how much time in hours and money in under-performing baits you will have wasted over the coming years in your possible ignorance. Having said that no-one knows everything about baits and most bait company bosses appear to have certain gaps in their knowledge.
There is are hard core of bait company bosses who by definition have been doing it for decades longer than anyone else and know far more in theoretical and practical terms as a result but even these top guys often have to compromise performance aspects of their bait due to the actual sensory and practical preferences of their human customers and their price sensitivity too! This gives the homemade bait maker enormous opportunities to out-fish very many popular ready made baits; certainly many of the most successful homemade baits I have made could not be offered commercially because buyers simply would not relate to them as conventional carp baits at all and would not buy them; unfortunately such is the mentality of the average angler and shows just how much they have been conditioned as much as carp! Having an open mind about bait is a definite advantage!
There are also very many bait company guys out there who are really just starting out with pretty limited actual working knowledge of even a handful of recipes of ready made baits they might be offering. Certain further gaps in knowledge might be in connection with various aspects of carp senses operations and in maximizing their exploitation potential, or in regards to how certain sweet substances impact physiologically to change DNA, carp preferences and taste cells cross adaptation impacts, or what to include to actually regulate carp blood sugar levels beneficially.
Significantly it might be some bait company bosses over-look completely the long-term (behaviour-forming) impacts of more obscure antioxidant additives on carp preferences, or the deeper aspects of enhancing impacts of certain non, semi-essential and essential amino acids for various effects using any of a whole range of substances, or even in regards to exactly how flavours work etc! It doesn't matter if you substitute cheese puffs for cheese doodles. The closer the food gets to the teenager, the more likely it is to be eaten. It is the accuracy of the bait; it is the same way with fish. You've got to put your lure or bait where fish will not have to expend energy.
The biggest fish, especially bass, are smart and lazy. They have learned to stay close to cover where they can be protected while waiting to ambush prey. One of the best places to find fish is in structure. Structure could be any number of things: docks, boat ramps, rocks, trees, stumps, bridges, or any other place fish can find protection and still meet their basic needs. Not all structure holds fish, but if you can find structure located next to deep water, there is a good chance fish will be holding there. If you scare fish with inaccurate casts, they will often head to deeper water until they feel safe enough to return. This decreases your chances of catching them.
You May Not Get a Second Chance to Make Fish Strike

You're TEN Casts Away From a Ten Pound BASS-Take This Test!
Here's the test every angler should take.
Take a lure or weight and rig it to your fishing pole. If you are using a lure, take off the hooks. Try to practice with a weight equal to what you would typically fish with.
Mark off 15-20 feet. Place a plate or frisbee on the ground. Step back and make ten casts. Keep track of how often you get the lure on the target.
Keep track of how many casts it takes you to hit the target? Imagine there is huge fish waiting under the target. Your chances of catching that fish dramatically decrease with each successive cast. The goal is to hit the target directly on the first cast, every time. If you can't do this, practice for a few weeks and it will become second nature. You'll catch more fish, guaranteed.
When Did you Hit the Target?
1st Cast: If you hit the target on the first cast, you can often generate a reaction strike. If you generate a reaction strike, almost any lure will cause a fish to strike. At this point the fish is often just reacting. Be ready to set your hook.
2nd Cast: You may be able to generate a reaction strike if you hit the target on this cast.
3rd Cast: You still have a shot at getting the fish, but you will most likely not generate a reaction strike.
4th Cast: If you haven't hit the target yet, you might be able to entice the fish to strike by using another method or lure.
5th Cast-10th Cast:
It is better to move on to a new location if you haven't hit the target by now. Although you may still get a strike, the fish is probably weary and will be harder to catch, even if it will take your lure.
Every time your cast lands off target, there is a good chance that you are scaring off wary fish. Instead of startling the fish and generating a reaction strike, you just scared it into not striking. To dramatically increase the number of fish you catch, you will need to cast into structure, not around structure. This second test will simulate a fish holding in structure. If you hit any thing other than the target, you should consider yourself snagged. A snag that needs to be released by hand instantly drops your chances of catching fish in that area. If you have to unhook a snag, there is a good chance that you will scare of all the fish in a 20-30 foot radius. Work on your cast until you can hit the target without hitting the chair. Do this and you will catch more fish.
Take a chair and put it over the plate. Push the plate four inches back from the front legs of the chair. Cast ten times. How long did it take you to hit the target?

Fishing for Relaxation
Life can sometimes be hectic. You may have a job that is stressful, or maybe you just have a lot to do each day. No matter where it comes from, stress is unproductive and annoying. It is also bad for your health. There are a number of medical conditions that can be brought on by too much stress, so it is a great idea to get rid of this stress long before anything can happen from it. Fishing is a great way for you to be able to reduce stress and really relax.
Now, you may be thinking that you have seen those people on television fishing and the type of fishing that they are doing does not look very relaxing. They are speeding out onto a lake in a boat and then they start casting as quickly as they can. Well, in truth, this type of fishing is not relaxing. This is competitive fishing and there are about as many differences between competitive fishing and relaxing fishing as there are between major league baseball and playing catch in the back yard.
If you want to be able to relax, than you must learn how fish relaxed. For this, you will want to fish from a boat or else fish from the shoreline. If you are fishing from the shoreline, you can set up a nice folding chair, lean back, and relax. If you are fishing from a boat, you can feel the relaxing ebb and flow from the waves beneath you. The most relaxing technique for you to use is bobber fishing. You should just cast out your bobber with a worm or a minnow underneath it and watch for when it goes down. You will feel yourself becoming more relaxed even as you just watch your bobber.

Making Cheap Carp Fishing Baits - The Reality of Recipes That Work!
So how do you begin to formulate a homemade bait that will compete with all those expensive ready made baits? This is a long piece on this subject that will give you a practical insight into the formulation and impacts of using highly successful economical homemade baits against more expensive ready made baits - so read on!
Many anglers seem to get the completely wrong idea and actually begin with thoughts about flavours and ingredients instead of the most powerful and obvious starting point, the one that will guarantee success! When your starting point is the fish themselves you are thinking much more closely like a fish than like an angler who has all kinds of personal preferences about baits which very frequently bear very little relationship with what carp senses most respond to in terms of feeding.
For instance, I went on a rare trip to a commercial water last week and using my own homemade baits, I out-fished the 15 guys fishing during the period fished who were literally all using popular ready made baits. So what does this say about the thinking and fishing approach of the average carp angler? Some of the guys either side of me were getting very frustrated with their ready made baits which had cost them in some cases over 10 pounds a kilogram. Also the baits they were using have been very successful in the past on a range of waters including this very one fished and some other ready made baits other guys were using were newer to the water than the longer-established ready made baits. My baits which had never been experienced by the fish before did so well for many powerful reasons.
I even showed my baits to some of the other anglers. I explained that my free baits and hook baits were quite savoury and sweet tasting at the same time and had a taste that lingered on the tongue with only had a very subtle smell. The guys did not seem impressed with these which is a shame because they certainly out-fished the fruit flavoured ready made bait someone had given me to field test which these guys seemed to like a lot more even though it did not perform as well!
Ideally you will begin with the fishes essential dietary requirements because by doing this you are guaranteed to give fish many reasons to eat your bait. But in a competitive fishing environment where many baits supply quality nutrition many other factors give you the edge. For example if your bait actually performs better in water at pulling fish into your swim for instance, or at improving the amount of bait fish are willing to repeatedly swallow even beyond the amounts they would usually feel full up. You might have palatability improving additives that increase the likelihood that your baits are actually consumed instead of merely being mouthed.
It is a fact that you can make your own homemade baits so potently stimulatory that carp will actually rub their bellies and fins on them to get even more of those goodies out of them. Such potent over-dosed baits are ideal for pulling maximum numbers of fish into your swim while you can use under-dosed hook baits that fish will devour instantly. (Note in this example I am not referring to over-dosing using flavours.)
There are so many incredible secrets about baits. The way baits interact with water is absolutely vital and the leverage of the substances of your baits is severely limited by your skills at feeding free baits in the right volumes, regularity and patterns and so on to suit every fishing situation.
Altogether too many ready made carp baits are simply too indigestible to offer very many competitive advantages over better designed baits and many ready made baits offer so many bog standard ingredients that carp have been force-fed on for decades that they simply do not need to eat them as the essential requirements they supply have pretty much been permanently satiated.
One of the biggest secrets is to offer your carp something different and preferably unique to you alone. This might be just one ingredient or additive or the actual omission of many of the more frequently used ingredients and additives. The fish really know the difference and I know that this is a very strong reason for some of the big bait companies to use a product called Cypry Spice from a bait company called Willis Worms in Wales to replace the old very familiar Robin Red.
Just one way you can achieve this is in the unique and purposely differentiated ratios, levels and combination's of ingredients and additives in both powdered and liquid forms that you apply in your baits (and ground baits) within digestible and practicable limitations. Personally I prefer to source unique additives and ingredients and natural flavour components that all enhance the impacts of each other as much as possible to induce repeated carp feeding for as long as possible. Experiencing this in action while actually fishing is such a great buzz of confidence and this is one of the most exciting things about preparing, making and using homemade baits
For example for my session last week I made up a large volume of extremely cheap bait based mainly around a combination of a liquid fish protein (not the all too familiar L030,) and fish oil, and a high PC lecithin used in very high levels. This was added to a very simple base mix which contained the basic dietary essential carp requirements and had a very good and practically proven digestibility. This means that this bait is eaten and digested comparatively quickly at relatively little energy cost to the fish compared to so many other baits. This also means that the fish get to instinctively feel all the components and benefits of eating this bait and very quickly are ready to consume more of it which as you can imagine is a huge advantage when session fishing!
While fishing my session last week I was baiting up extremely regularly to combat the impacts of bait-robbing roach and bream shoals and still getting big fish rolling over my baits and seeing fish feeding on the baits along with accompanying fish catches. It got to the stage that the ready made bait guys fishing either side of me were scratching their heads and simply hoping for a bite. I noticed these guys only had 2 or three kilograms of bait and were introducing that sparingly, not even realising that the bulk of it was being whittled away within the hour by marauding roach and other smaller species!
Sure you can catch fish fishing small amounts of bait or single hook baits but actually controlling fish behaviours by leveraging the impacts of free baiting is one of the most powerful edges in carp fishing and is the cornerstone of top level match-fishing success! I used to fish with a guy who match-fished for England youth as well as a friend from school called Dion who match fished for England for many years and ground bait figured in the strategic thinking in many ways and although I was able to use this to out-fish them while carp fishing and sea fishing, they both taught me loads along the way and of course we never stop learning!
A very big part of their problem just how expensive their ready made baits were, after all few anglers can keep spending 10 pound a kilogram on bait added to high ticket prices, food, traveling costs etc, and be able to use enough bait to compete by actually leveraging bait to maximum effect. By making your own bait of course this is not a problem and in fact is the only way I can afford to compete with bait-sponsored anglers myself. On such waters the use of boilies really is important because the smaller species are very definitely not so small and will destroy a carefully introduced bed of particles or ground bait or pellets within minutes. When the roach reach 3 pounds and average 1 pound alongside other specimen tench, crucian carp etc the application of the correct free bait is crucial for outstanding success.
The big point here is the actual leverage of bait and being able to maximize its impacts on carp. To do this you need to sustain enough dissolved substances in the water in and around your swim to pull those carp in and keep them interested long enough for the biggest fish to compete amongst themselves and give you a very good shot at a multiple big fish catch - by design!
You simply cannot do this consistently when fishing on a budget with a only a couple of kilograms of bait on waters teaming with specimen-sized smaller species, be it giant roach, bream, crucian carp, single figure carp, specimen tench, nuisance catfish and others. The attentions of all these fish can be harnessed to actually attract more carp into your swim buy only if you use enough bait in the right way in correct situations to do it, (many top anglers really are masters at doing this!)
In fact many very consistent big carp anglers are not particularly technically skilled but have an incredible if not instinctive talent for maximising the application and leverage of the impacts of bait. I feel this subject is much misunderstood and is a vital leveller of talent, time and money between anglers of lesser resources who deserve to catch and not blank or suffer comparatively poor catches when exceptional catches are actually within their reach with enough knowledge put into practice!
I saw all around me guys using pellets, standard 14 and 18 millimeter boilies for example, ready made ground bait balls and method mixes that the big roach shoals were tearing into. A lot of the guys were reeling in with their ready made baits completely whittled off their rigs so you can imagine the impact of the small fish on their free baits!
By contrast I was applying 2 distinct types of baits to my swim to counteract the problem of smaller fish and also to allow the carp to get a smell and taste of my baits and leading them to making mistakes with my hook baits! By strange coincidence, much of the bait I had prepared had been designed to deal with the crayfish in another water I was going to fish and did not. In this particular case my boilies were of 2 types; soft semi-boiled boilies for free baiting, and rock hard super-boosted hook bait boilies absolutely packed with naturally potent triggers and other vital substances to provide competitive edges.
Many of my free baits were well over 25 millimeters in size and none were made to be round but rather all were odd shaped and were in fact not prepared by rolling at all. Only a small proportion of the free baits were of around the standard 12 or 14 millimeter sizes. These free baits were designed to dissolve within about 4 hours of immersion thereby doing the maximum work in pulling and triggering fish while not giving them much time to actually eat them! The vast majority of ready made boilies will not break down for at least 8 to 36 hours or longer so you can see how much their effectiveness is limited by their actual form; the preference of average anglers for durable hard boilies as free baits and hook baits has many drawbacks!
I have seen with my own eyes very big carp actually fanning away standard round boilies in order to be able to pick up smaller odd shaped baits in safety. (On the lake bed odd shaped baits are very often standard round boilies which have been in the water a while, long enough for smaller fish to whittle them down in size and shape and which wary carp view with far less suspicion as these hook them far less than whole round baits!)
By contrast though, my hook baits and a proportion of matching free baits were of a totally different design and were super-boosted with natural triggers and were rock hard. These baits were of very small size and about as far from conventional machine-rolled shape, texture, density etc that you could imagine. These baits in large sizes where used in PVA bags and a very hard paste in large sized pieces were also used to very good effect.
This might all sound like common sense and to some of you like hard work, but I paid my money to fish the commercial fishery just the same as the other 15 anglers there but I spent less on my bait and still had better results despite them using the most popular brands of ready made baits. In part due to my 30 years in carp fishing, my own scientific research and long bait-making experience and my fellow BCSG friends my interest in bait and fish senses, metabolism, health, etc and my ability to improve my baits has come a very long way, and every week I get to learn new things to give me more competitive fishing edges and even more economical baits!
You may not be into master antioxidants, metabolic stimulants, bioactive flavour components or sorting the first to third limiting amino acids in your bait recipes. But I can assure you that just a few of the most powerful secrets will multiply your catches to the degree you will shudder at just how much time in hours and money in under-performing baits you will have wasted over the coming years in your possible ignorance. Having said that no-one knows everything about baits and most bait company bosses appear to have certain gaps in their knowledge.
There is are hard core of bait company bosses who by definition have been doing it for decades longer than anyone else and know far more in theoretical and practical terms as a result but even these top guys often have to compromise performance aspects of their bait due to the actual sensory and practical preferences of their human customers and their price sensitivity too! This gives the homemade bait maker enormous opportunities to out-fish very many popular ready made baits; certainly many of the most successful homemade baits I have made could not be offered commercially because buyers simply would not relate to them as conventional carp baits at all and would not buy them; unfortunately such is the mentality of the average angler and shows just how much they have been conditioned as much as carp! Having an open mind about bait is a definite advantage!
There are also very many bait company guys out there who are really just starting out with pretty limited actual working knowledge of even a handful of recipes of ready made baits they might be offering. Certain further gaps in knowledge might be in connection with various aspects of carp senses operations and in maximizing their exploitation potential, or in regards to how certain sweet substances impact physiologically to change DNA, carp preferences and taste cells cross adaptation impacts, or what to include to actually regulate carp blood sugar levels beneficially.
Significantly it might be some bait company bosses over-look completely the long-term (behaviour-forming) impacts of more obscure antioxidant additives on carp preferences, or the deeper aspects of enhancing impacts of certain non, semi-essential and essential amino acids for various effects using any of a whole range of substances, or even in regards to exactly how flavours work etc! For instance, I went on a rare trip to a commercial water last week and using my own homemade baits, I out-fished the 15 guys fishing during the period fished who were literally all using popular ready made baits. So what does this say about the thinking and fishing approach of the average carp angler? Some of the guys either side of me were getting very frustrated with their ready made baits which had cost them in some cases over 10 pounds a kilogram. Also the baits they were using have been very successful in the past on a range of waters including this very one fished and some other ready made baits other guys were using were newer to the water than the longer-established ready made baits. My baits which had never been experienced by the fish before did so well for many powerful reasons.
I even showed my baits to some of the other anglers. I explained that my free baits and hook baits were quite savoury and sweet tasting at the same time and had a taste that lingered on the tongue with only had a very subtle smell. The guys did not seem impressed with these which is a shame because they certainly out-fished the fruit flavoured ready made bait someone had given me to field test which these guys seemed to like a lot more even though it did not perform as well!
Ideally you will begin with the fishes essential dietary requirements because by doing this you are guaranteed to give fish many reasons to eat your bait. But in a competitive fishing environment where many baits supply quality nutrition many other factors give you the edge. For example if your bait actually performs better in water at pulling fish into your swim for instance, or at improving the amount of bait fish are willing to repeatedly swallow even beyond the amounts they would usually feel full up. You might have palatability improving additives that increase the likelihood that your baits are actually consumed instead of merely being mouthed.
It is a fact that you can make your own homemade baits so potently stimulatory that carp will actually rub their bellies and fins on them to get even more of those goodies out of them. Such potent over-dosed baits are ideal for pulling maximum numbers of fish into your swim while you can use under-dosed hook baits that fish will devour instantly. (Note in this example I am not referring to over-dosing using flavours.)
There are so many incredible secrets about baits. The way baits interact with water is absolutely vital and the leverage of the substances of your baits is severely limited by your skills at feeding free baits in the right volumes, regularity and patterns and so on to suit every fishing situation.
Altogether too many ready made carp baits are simply too indigestible to offer very many competitive advantages over better designed baits and many ready made baits offer so many bog standard ingredients that carp have been force-fed on for decades that they simply do not need to eat them as the essential requirements they supply have pretty much been permanently satiated.
One of the biggest secrets is to offer your carp something different and preferably unique to you alone. This might be just one ingredient or additive or the actual omission of many of the more frequently used ingredients and additives. The fish really know the difference and I know that this is a very strong reason for some of the big bait companies to use a product called Cypry Spice from a bait company called Willis Worms in Wales to replace the old very familiar Robin Red.
Just one way you can achieve this is in the unique and purposely differentiated ratios, levels and combination's of ingredients and additives in both powdered and liquid forms that you apply in your baits (and ground baits) within digestible and practicable limitations. Personally I prefer to source unique additives and ingredients and natural flavour components that all enhance the impacts of each other as much as possible to induce repeated carp feeding for as long as possible. Experiencing this in action while actually fishing is such a great buzz of confidence and this is one of the most exciting things about preparing, making and using homemade baits
For example for my session last week I made up a large volume of extremely cheap bait based mainly around a combination of a liquid fish protein (not the all too familiar L030,) and fish oil, and a high PC lecithin used in very high levels. This was added to a very simple base mix which contained the basic dietary essential carp requirements and had a very good and practically proven digestibility. This means that this bait is eaten and digested comparatively quickly at relatively little energy cost to the fish compared to so many other baits. This also means that the fish get to instinctively feel all the components and benefits of eating this bait and very quickly are ready to consume more of it which as you can imagine is a huge advantage when session fishing!
While fishing my session last week I was baiting up extremely regularly to combat the impacts of bait-robbing roach and bream shoals and still getting big fish rolling over my baits and seeing fish feeding on the baits along with accompanying fish catches. I noticed these guys only had 2 or three kilograms of bait and were introducing that sparingly, not even realising that the bulk of it was being whittled away within the hour by marauding roach and other smaller species!
Sure you can catch fish fishing small amounts of bait or single hook baits but actually controlling fish behaviours by leveraging the impacts of free baiting is one of the most powerful edges in carp fishing and is the cornerstone of top level match-fishing success! I used to fish with a guy who match-fished for England youth as well as a friend from school called Dion who match fished for England for many years and ground bait figured in the strategic thinking in many ways and although I was able to use this to out-fish them while carp fishing and sea fishing, they both taught me loads along the way and of course we never stop learning!
A very big part of their problem just how expensive their ready made baits were, after all few anglers can keep spending 10 pound a kilogram on bait added to high ticket prices, food, traveling costs etc, and be able to use enough bait to compete by actually leveraging bait to maximum effect. By making your own bait of course this is not a problem and in fact is the only way I can afford to compete with bait-sponsored anglers myself. On such waters the use of boilies really is important because the smaller species are very definitely not so small and will destroy a carefully introduced bed of particles or ground bait or pellets within minutes. When the roach reach 3 pounds and average 1 pound alongside other specimen tench, crucian carp etc the application of the correct free bait is crucial for outstanding success.
The big point here is the actual leverage of bait and being able to maximize its impacts on carp. To do this you need to sustain enough dissolved substances in the water in and around your swim to pull those carp in and keep them interested long enough for the biggest fish to compete amongst themselves and give you a very good shot at a multiple big fish catch - by design!
You simply cannot do this consistently when fishing on a budget with a only a couple of kilograms of bait on waters teaming with specimen-sized smaller species, be it giant roach, bream, crucian carp, single figure carp, specimen tench, nuisance catfish and others. The attentions of all these fish can be harnessed to actually attract more carp into your swim buy only if you use enough bait in the right way in correct situations to do it, (many top anglers really are masters at doing this!)

The Easiest Way to Catch More Fish
The secret anyone can use to catch more fish is improving casting. Many anglers never actually practice their casting. Improving your casting is such a simple way to increase strikes that it often goes overlooked by most anglers. Many anglers don't even think about casting until they are on the water. Inaccurate casting dramatically decreases your chances of catching big fish. Don't assume you are a proficient caster just because you've caught fish or because you've been fishing for a long time. Don't make the same mistake that I did-take this test now to see if you can cast.
The Test that Tripled the Number of Fish I Caught
The tackle companies and chain stores make big profits from unsuspecting anglers. In fact, according the the US Fish and Wildlife Service, sportspersons spent an estimated $34 billion in 2001 alone. The fishing industry spends a lot of money on packaging and sponsorships to try to convince anglers that they know all about what catches fish. They would like you to believe that their expensive "scientifically tested" lures are catching you fish, but it just may be where your lure or bait landed that actually caught the fish. Take the test in this article before wasting any money on overpriced lures or gimmicks.
Monster Bass are Lazy. You Can't Be!
Big fish are lazy. They are looking to gain the most amount of energy for the least amount of work. They are like a teenager sitting on a couch watching TV. If you put cheese doodles on the coffee table, they will be eaten in an instant, but if you place the cheese doodles ten feet away, out of an arm's reach, you will dramatically decrease the chance that they will be eaten. It doesn't matter if you substitute cheese puffs for cheese doodles. The closer the food gets to the teenager, the more likely it is to be eaten. It is the accuracy of the bait; it is the same way with fish. You've got to put your lure or bait where fish will not have to expend energy.
The biggest fish, especially bass, are smart and lazy. They have learned to stay close to cover where they can be protected while waiting to ambush prey. One of the best places to find fish is in structure. Structure could be any number of things: docks, boat ramps, rocks, trees, stumps, bridges, or any other place fish can find protection and still meet their basic needs. Not all structure holds fish, but if you can find structure located next to deep water, there is a good chance fish will be holding there. If you scare fish with inaccurate casts, they will often head to deeper water until they feel safe enough to return. This decreases your chances of catching them.
You May Not Get a Second Chance to Make Fish Strike
The first cast you make has the highest probability of generating a reaction strike. On certain days, only the first cast will catch fish. If you've ever cast and gotten a strike, but then didn't get any more strikes, the first strike was most likely a reaction strike. You may not get a second chance at a large fish. If your cast is off by even a foot, you might send a lunker into deeper water where it will wait for a more accurate caster to come along and catch it.
The Cast is More Important Than the Lure
An amazing lure that a fish never sees won't catch fish. You can generate reaction strikes with some simple lures and they do not to be expensive. Instead of wasting money on expensive lures that promise to catch fish, it is a better idea to put five minutes a day into developing a great cast.
Seven Ways You Can Catch More Fish By Improving Your Casting
When you can consistently and accurately cast a lure 20-30 feet, you'll catch more fish. Becoming a great caster can double the number of fish you catch. Pinpoint accuracy can be the difference between a fish in the boat or just a splash on the water.
o Most anglers don't get as much time as they would like to on the water, and without knowing it, many anglers are practicing their casting while they are fishing. This is not the time to practice casting! Imagine if the only time basketball players practiced shooting was during a game! Their shooting percentages would plummet. It is the same with fishing. Practice at home in the off season and your percentages will go up.
o Practicing casting is a great way to cure cabin fever in the off season.
o Practicing casting will help you become more familiar with your equipment as well as maintaining it for fishing trips.
o If you can't cast with pinpoint accuracy, you will not be able to access some of the best spots to catch fish, deep in heavy cover.
o If you can't cast with pinpoint accuracy you will get snagged. While you're snagged your lure or bait isn't in the water and you are decreasing your chances of catching fish.
o If you are releasing a snag, you will be scaring fish and adding frustration to your day.
o Increasing your casting ability creates instant confidence. Confidence is the most important factor in fishing.
You're TEN Casts Away From a Ten Pound BASS-Take This Test!
Here's the test every angler should take.
Take a lure or weight and rig it to your fishing pole. If you are using a lure, take off the hooks. Try to practice with a weight equal to what you would typically fish with.
Mark off 15-20 feet. Place a plate or frisbee on the ground. Step back and make ten casts. Keep track of how often you get the lure on the target.
Keep track of how many casts it takes you to hit the target? Imagine there is huge fish waiting under the target. Your chances of catching that fish dramatically decrease with each successive cast. The goal is to hit the target directly on the first cast, every time. If you can't do this, practice for a few weeks and it will become second nature. You'll catch more fish, guaranteed.
When Did you Hit the Target?
1st Cast: If you hit the target on the first cast, you can often generate a reaction strike. If you generate a reaction strike, almost any lure will cause a fish to strike. At this point the fish is often just reacting. Be ready to set your hook.
2nd Cast: You may be able to generate a reaction strike if you hit the target on this cast.
3rd Cast: You still have a shot at getting the fish, but you will most likely not generate a reaction strike.
4th Cast: If you haven't hit the target yet, you might be able to entice the fish to strike by using another method or lure.
5th Cast-10th Cast:
It is better to move on to a new location if you haven't hit the target by now. Although you may still get a strike, the fish is probably weary and will be harder to catch, even if it will take your lure.
Every time your cast lands off target, there is a good chance that you are scaring off wary fish. Instead of startling the fish and generating a reaction strike, you just scared it into not striking. Increase your accuracy, and you'll increase your confidence, and you'll catch more fish. Can you consistently hit a small target with a lure? Professional anglers know the importance of casting. They practice, and you should too!
Test #2 Catch Even More Fish
To dramatically increase the number of fish you catch, you will need to cast into structure, not around structure. This second test will simulate a fish holding in structure. If you hit any thing other than the target, you should consider yourself snagged. A snag that needs to be released by hand instantly drops your chances of catching fish in that area. If you have to unhook a snag, there is a good chance that you will scare of all the fish in a 20-30 foot radius. Work on your cast until you can hit the target without hitting the chair. Do this and you will catch more fish.
Take a chair and put it over the plate. Push the plate four inches back from the front legs of the chair. Cast ten times. How long did it take you to hit the target?
Most anglers practice their casting while they are fishing. If you want to increase your strikes by 50%, 60%, 70% or more, practice your casting at home and catch fish when you go fishing.

They would like you to believe that their expensive "scientifically tested" lures are catching you fish, but it just may be where your lure or bait landed that actually caught the fish. Take the test in this article before wasting any money on overpriced lures or gimmicks.
Monster Bass are Lazy. You Can't Be!
Big fish are lazy. They are looking to gain the most amount of energy for the least amount of work. They are like a teenager sitting on a couch watching TV. If you put cheese doodles on the coffee table, they will be eaten in an instant, but if you place the cheese doodles ten feet away, out of an arm's reach, you will dramatically decrease the chance that they will be eaten. It doesn't matter if you substitute cheese puffs for cheese doodles. The closer the food gets to the teenager, the more likely it is to be eaten. It is the accuracy of the bait; it is the same way with fish. You've got to put your lure or bait where fish will not have to expend energy.
The biggest fish, especially bass, are smart and lazy. They have learned to stay close to cover where they can be protected while waiting to ambush prey. One of the best places to find fish is in structure. Structure could be any number of things: docks, boat ramps, rocks, trees, stumps, bridges, or any other place fish can find protection and still meet their basic needs. Not all structure holds fish, but if you can find structure located next to deep water, there is a good chance fish will be holding there. If you scare fish with inaccurate casts, they will often head to deeper water until they feel safe enough to return. This decreases your chances of catching them.
You May Not Get a Second Chance to Make Fish Strike
The first cast you make has the highest probability of generating a reaction strike. On certain days, only the first cast will catch fish. If you've ever cast and gotten a strike, but then didn't get any more strikes, the first strike was most likely a reaction strike. You may not get a second chance at a large fish. If your cast is off by even a foot, you might send a lunker into deeper water where it will wait for a more accurate caster to come along and catch it.

You're TEN Casts Away From a Ten Pound BASS-Take This Test!
Here's the test every angler should take.
Take a lure or weight and rig it to your fishing pole. If you are using a lure, take off the hooks. Try to practice with a weight equal to what you would typically fish with.
Mark off 15-20 feet. Place a plate or frisbee on the ground. Step back and make ten casts. Keep track of how often you get the lure on the target.
Keep track of how many casts it takes you to hit the target? Imagine there is huge fish waiting under the target. Your chances of catching that fish dramatically decrease with each successive cast. The goal is to hit the target directly on the first cast, every time. If you can't do this, practice for a few weeks and it will become second nature. You'll catch more fish, guaranteed.
When Did you Hit the Target?
1st Cast: If you hit the target on the first cast, you can often generate a reaction strike. If you generate a reaction strike, almost any lure will cause a fish to strike. At this point the fish is often just reacting. Be ready to set your hook.
2nd Cast: You may be able to generate a reaction strike if you hit the target on this cast.
3rd Cast: You still have a shot at getting the fish, but you will most likely not generate a reaction strike.
4th Cast: If you haven't hit the target yet, you might be able to entice the fish to strike by using another method or lure.
5th Cast-10th Cast:
It is better to move on to a new location if you haven't hit the target by now. Although you may still get a strike, the fish is probably weary and will be harder to catch, even if it will take your lure.
Every time your cast lands off target, there is a good chance that you are scaring off wary fish. Instead of startling the fish and generating a reaction strike, you just scared it into not striking. Increase your accuracy, and you'll increase your confidence, and you'll catch more fish. Can you consistently hit a small target with a lure? Professional anglers know the importance of casting. They practice, and you should too!
Test #2 Catch Even More Fish
To dramatically increase the number of fish you catch, you will need to cast into structure, not around structure. This second test will simulate a fish holding in structure. If you hit any thing other than the target, you should consider yourself snagged. A snag that needs to be released by hand instantly drops your chances of catching fish in that area. If you have to unhook a snag, there is a good chance that you will scare of all the fish in a 20-30 foot radius. Work on your cast until you can hit the target without hitting the chair. Do this and you will catch more fish.
Take a chair and put it over the plate. Push the plate four inches back from the front legs of the chair. Cast ten times. How long did it take you to hit the target?
Most anglers practice their casting while they are fishing. If you want to increase your strikes by 50%, 60%, 70% or more, practice your casting at home and catch fish when you go fishing.

Alternative Fishing Styles
There we were, me and my new fishing apprentice at the lake. I was teaching him the rudiments of handling the rod and putting the bait and we were trying to catch a lake trout while discussing everything from sports to the most effective technique to escape from boring clothes-shopping with our wives. I got some good ideas, I must confess.
At some point he asked me if there were some other fishing techniques or alternative styles. "Is it always just a fishing rod, reel, bait, and waiting in sport fishing?" he asked.
Of course it is the most common way to fish but it is not the only way to fish. In sport fishing, there are different techniques and tools for fishing depending on the type of fish you want to catch. There are even games you can play with friends or family.
One of Murphy's laws says that if something can be used for something else besides its original use, someone will do it. Some techniques or methods are more dangerous or fun than others.
Before I could explain him about some fun ways to fish as well as others too dangerous to practice for a starter, I don't know why it came to my mind a piece from the New Testament that says that Jesus is reported to have said to his disciples: "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." (Matthew 4:19). Then I said that in those times, fishing with a net in a group was considered an honest effort to make a living. I don't know if he is a religious man, but he agreed with that idea.
Some of you might not like the techniques discussed here. Others will love them; it is a mater of diversity and sportsmanship.
One of the first fishing techniques we discussed and one I like, is Hand
Fishing, also known as Trout Tickling or Noodling if you are fishing
catfish. Noodling doesn't require any kind of fishing tool but your hand
and it is fun, just try it sometime. It is also possible to fish lobsters
when you are diving or "Pearl" Fishing.
A variant of it is the Hand-Line Fishing. You just need a line and a small piece of wood or something to roll the line. I've seen this done at some beaches in Mexico but, as far as I know, this is illegal in Kansas.
Another "ancestral" way to fish is Spear Fishing. Traditional Spear
Fishing is restricted to shallow waters, but the development of the spear
gun has made this method much more efficient. Fishing can be done with an
ordinary spear or a specialized variant such as an eel spear or with a
long or short trident. You can be at a river shore or in the water with
basic or complete scuba equipment. A variant of this is "Bow Fishing"
which might not be fun if you keep losing arrows!!
Net Fishing is another method of sport fishing. All fishing nets are
meshes that are usually knotted by a relatively thin thread. Modern nets
are usually made of nylon, although nets made of wool or silk thread were
common until recently and are still used in certain areas. The casting net is circular and the diameter varies. The way to use it is sinking it at the same time you make a forward motion from surface-down to bottom and then up. There is a chance that you catch something else, but hey, some coracles are as good as fish, besides this is also the way they are caught.
Trawling is a fishing method that involves pulling a fishing net through
the water behind one or more boats. In Mexico there is a place where the
nets simulate butterflies wings and fish like this. A gill net catches
fish which try to pass through it by snagging on the gill covers. Thus
trapped, the fish can neither advance trough the net nor retreat.
I find Kite Fishing very exotic. It was invented in China and then learned by people in New Guinea and other Pacific Islands. It is a very
non-traditional way of fishing for a newbie getting into the fishing
world. It was used by people who did not have a boat to fish, but also was very handy when fishing conditions were difficult or the fishing places were inaccessible or dangerous.
Ice Fishing, do I have to say more? Just get a line, a hook and open a
hole in the ice, just don't put your hand in it!
Fish Trapping is another way for fishing. There are two types of traps:
the semi-permanent and the permanent. Depending on the type of fish you
want to get, the traps can be several feet long to relatively short. An
example is dam fishing by building a temporary dam in such a way that
makes it easier to catch the fish. Other types are the tripods used in the Congo and the weir structures or baskets used in medieval times. The
baskets or weir structures are built according to the fish to catch
Another "natural" way to fish, involves trained animals like cormorant,
remoras and dogs.
Fishing using toxins is not a healthy way for catching fish. There are
some natural toxins found in some plants, and the main idea is to paralyze the fish so you can easily catch it by hand. The fish either dies right after suffocating or later in transport. This is not only dangerous because you can get poisoned too, but it is illegal.
In my opinion, using explosives are not only dangerous for you if you
don't know how to handle explosives, but also for the environment. It
kills by direct hit or shockwave. The worst thing about it is that it is not selective.
Another dangerous practice is electro-fishing. It sounds like a new dance,
but actually is a fishing technique that involves electricity. Depending
on the type of fish, you can select the voltage (a bit of electrical
knowledge would be good) to stun the fish. The problem is that you can
also injure a diver and he can get really mad at you. The device is supposed to be secure for water usage since it has a dead-man-switch in case you fall in the water.
So my Padawan learner might want to get into other fishing techniques. And I hope he does as long as he doesn't blow up a lake or electrocute someone else, after all, fishing is a gentlemen's sport based on honest effort.

Good Fishing: Luck or Skill?
Growing up in central Nebraska, I was an avid deer hunter. My first few years of experience were hard. Some days we'd go out and walk for miles without seeing a thing all day; other days, we might stumble across a few small does that would have made for an embarrassing display at the check-in station. These experiences added up to tell me that deer hunting was mostly luck, and a bit of skill once you had a shot at something decent. But every year, there would be the same guys coming into the station with their big, beautiful 5x5 trophy bucks. A fishing lodge with a fixed location may have great fishing for several years in a row; but when the fish move to a different area, customers who visit may be out of luck. Fishing resorts will use old pics to advertise fishing, when the fishing was good only 20 years ago.
By the same token, you need experience to know the fish's patterns of behavior. The fish could be right under your nose and they just need the right bait. Or, they may be in a separate location in the area you're fishing due to a number of factors. In either case an experienced guide comes in handy. If he knows where they are and how to catch them, you'll most likely have a pretty successful run.
So is fishing luck or skill? If you know where they are and the techniques on how to catch them, luck has very little to do with it and skill is the clear winner. When booking your next fishing expedition, keep this in mind. Look for lodges or charters that know where the fish are and have experienced guides who can help you fill the cooler with plenty of them!
